What Happened

Barton County Sheriff's Office authorities are investigating a collision that killed a driver at NE 130 Ave and NE 70th Rd in Barton County, KS on January 13th, 2022. Police are saying the incident happened around 12:20 p.m. Initial investigation revealed a Mack truck hauling water operated by 36-year-old Eric Steinert was headed southbound on NE 130 Ave while a Peterbilt tuck tractor operated by 66-year-old David Wirth was approaching the intersection while headed westbound. Officials allege Wirth's vehicle failed to yield right of way and, after pulling into the path of the other truck, both collided before veering into a ditch. A fire engulfed the vehicles and Steinert suffered fatal injuries injuries at the scene. Wirth was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
