What Happened

State Police are investigating a crash that killed four people at Carroll St in Eden, NC on April 24th, 2025. Police say the incident happened around 1:23 p.m. According to investigators, a dump truck headed northbound on Carroll St allegedly ran a stop sign before proceeding into an intersection. There, reports indicate the vehicle struck six pedestrians performing maintenance work on power lines before also striking a bucket truck and entering into a ditch. Officials say four of the pedestrians were killed while two were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. The four who were killed were identified as 72-year-old Douglas Garland Sides, 32-year-old Madison Carter, 35-year-old William Evans, and 30-year-old Matthew Lockwood. The operator of the dump truck, identified as 66-year-old Michael Ray Vernon, was allegedly charged in connection with the collision and also hospitalized for treatment.
