What Happened

North Carolina Highway Patrol officials are investigating a collision that killed a motorcyclist at Hwy 55 in Sampson County, NC on June 5th, 2023. Police say the incident happened around 11:50 a.m. According to investigators, a motorcycle headed eastbound was struck by a semi-truck at the intersection with Green Path Rd. The collision caused the motorcycle operator, identified as 28-year-old Tyler Gilbert, to be thrown from the vehicle. Police confirmed Gilbert suffered fatal injuries in the crash. The semi-truck operator, identified as Richard Lee James, was alleged to have failed to yield by authorities. As a result, police have recommended and/or issued a misdemeanor death by motor vehicle charge and failure to yield charge.
