What Happened

Area authorities are investigating a crash that killed a person at US 287 in Montague County, TX on September 11th, 2022. Police say the incident involved a southbound Chevrolet pickup truck crossing a center median into northbound traffic. From there, the vehicle struck a second Chevrolet pickup truck before continuing forward and crashing head-on into a tractor-trailer. The impact caused the pickup truck to overturn, ejecting a passenger from the vehicle. The driver, identified as 29-year-old Benjamin Lee Schaeffer, died at the scene. The passenger, identified as 26-year-old Mariah Helmberger, was hospitalized with serious injuries. The driver and passenger of both other vehicles were hospitalized with injuries and later released.
