What Happened

Texas Department of Public Safety officials are investigating a crash that killed one person at State Hwy 155 in Smith County, TX on September 8th, 2023. Police say the incident happened around 11:09 p.m. According to investigators, a Nissan Titan operated by 22-year-old William C. Chaplinski is alleged to have crossed a center line while attempting to pass another vehicle. It then collided head-on with a Kia Sportage operated by 42-year-old Harry Collins III. Collins suffered fatal injuries at the scene. Authorities allege Chaplinski was intoxicated at the time of the crash and sources say an Intoxication Manslaughter charge was recommended and/or issued.
