What Happened

Texas Department of Public Safety officials are investigating a crash that killed a driver at US 60 in Canyon, TX on October 12th, 2021. Officials are saying the incident happened around 5:40 a.m. According to investigators, a commercial truck operated by 71-year-old Gerald Abbott was headed westbound on US-60 and crossing eastbound lanes to turn south. A Chevrolet Cruze operated by 19-year-old Karina Nichole Ayala was headed eastbound in an outside lane. Police believe the commercial truck failed to yield and the Cruze collided with and traveled underneath the truck. Investigators say the Cruze may have been traveling at a speed above the posed limit at the time and Ayala suffered fatal injuries in the collision. Abbott was not injured. Records indicate a Failure to Yield Row-Yield Sign was recommended or issued.
