What Happened

Texas Department of Public Safety officials are investigating a crash that killed a teen at FM 839 in Rusk County, TX on December 20th, 2021. Officials are saying the incident happened around 7:40 p.m. A Chevrolet Malibu operated by 18-year-old Kiante Marquise Smith is said to have been headed northbound when it lost control at a curve in the road. It then veered into a grass median and through a barbed wire fence before overturning. Smith, who investigators allege was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries. Additional details were not provided.
