What Happened

Texas Department of Public Safety officials are investigating a crash that killed a woman at Hwy 96 near Lumberton, TX on August 6th, 2022. Police say the incident happened around 1 p.m. They say a GMC pickup collided with a Kia Soul slowing for a vehicle ahead making a turn. The Kia was then hit by a northbound tractor-trailer, causing fatal injuries to 36-year-old passenger, Laura Whitfill. The driver of the Kia, identified as 41-year-old Benjamin Whitfill and an 8-year-old child were both hospitalized with undisclosed injuries. The GMC driver, 75-year-old Freddie Smith, was hospitalized with undisclosed injuries. Additional information was not immediately available.
