What Happened

Texas Department of Public Safety officials are investigating a crash that killed a person at US 59 in Harrison County, TX on September 14th, 2021. Police say the incident happened around 12:17 p.m. A Dodge Ram 2500 operated by 25-year-old Christopher Rutherford was exiting a private drive headed westbound while attempting to cross northbound lanes of US 59. A Mitsubishi Lancer operated by 35-year-old Mario Beltran Cortes was headed northbound when the Dodge failed to yield and the two vehicles collided. The Lancer veered into a grass median, sliding sideways while the Dodge overturned, partially ejecting Rutherford. He suffered fatal injuries as a result of the collision. Cortes suffered serious injuries and was cited for No Driver License. Additional details were not available.
