What Happened

Texas Department of Public Safety officials are investigating a crash at US 83 in Rio Grande City, TX on December 18th, 2021. Police say the collision occurred around 4:26 a.m. and involved a Chevrolet Silverado and Ford Explorer. The Silverado is said to have been headed eastbound in a westbound lane of US 83 while the Explorer was headed westbound. Investigators say the Explorer reported attempted to brake to avoid a head-on collision prior to the two vehicles colliding. The driver of the Ford, a 28-year-old Sherman, TX man, suffered minor injuries. The Silverado driver, identified as 20-year-old Nayeli Rios, was seriously injured. Reports indicate Rios was charged with Driving While Intoxicated.
