What Happened

Area authorities are investigating a crash that killed a driver at  Loop 323 in Smith County, TX on October 9th, 2021. Police say the incident happened around 6:55 a.m. A vehicle operated by 80-year-old Rodolfo Piedra was headed southbound on County Rd 35 when it came to a stop at a stop sign at the intersection with Loop 323. Police say after stopping, the truck proceeded into the intersection and failed to yield to approaching traffic. As a result, it was struck by a Dodge Ram 3500 operated by a 38-year-old Tyler man. The Dodge allegedly attempted evasive action by pulling left, however both vehicles collided and Piedra's vehicle was pushed into a center grass median. He suffered serious injuries in the collision that he died from three days later. The Tyler man suffered minor injuries in the crash.
