What Happened

North Carolina Highway Patrol officials are investigating a crash that killed one person at I-40 in Johnston County, NC on June 13th, 2023. Police say the incident happened around 8:30 a.m. According to investigators, a westbound tractor-trailer is alleged to have been braking for traffic ahead when it became jackknifed. The truck then veered from its lane into a nearby shoulder, striking a pedestrian. The pedestrian, identified as 58-year-old Roy Dale Ward, was standing near a parked tractor-trailer at the time. Authorities say he was working as part of a crew that was in the process of transporting a large steel beam. The collision left him with fatal injuries while two occupants in the semi-tuck had suspected minor injuries. Additional information has not been made available.
