What Happened

Police are investigating a collision that killed one person involved at US 87 in China Grove, TX on September 14th, 2024. Authorities believe it happened sometime around 12:42 a.m. According to investigators, a Chevrolet Tahoe was headed eastbound on US 87, approaching a vehicle ahead that appeared to brake and travel to the right. As the Tahoe approached, reports say a pedestrian was standing in a middle lane of travel nearby and claim the vehicle was unable to avoid striking the pedestrian. The pedestrian, identified as 38-year-old Therston Benjamin, was still present in the roadway as another vehicle approached, striking Benjamin before fleeing the scene. Police Benjamin was fatally injured and noted the Tahoe did stop and remained at the scene for authorities. Additional inforamtion was not available.
