What Happened

State Police are investigating a crash that killed one person involved at I-40 in West Memphis, AR on May 29th, 2023. Police say the incident happened around 4:13 p.m. According to investigators, a box van was stopped in an eastbound lane of traffic for unclear reasons. Police believe an occupant of the truck, 30-year-old Abdi Mahbi, was standing at the front of the vehicle as a Cadillac Deville operated by 24-year-old Freddy Cotto Jr approached. Officers say the Cadillac collided with the rear of the box truck, pushing it into Mahbi at the front. Directly following the collision, the Cadillac also struck a nearby tractor-trailer before coming to rest. Cotto's passenger, identified as 24-year-old Emily Busby, was killed in the crash. Both Cotto and Mahbi had injuries that were not disclosed. Additional information was not available.
