What Happened

Area authorities have identified the person killed in a collision on I-85 in Coweta County, GA on March 15th, 2023. Officials named 49-year-old tow truck operator Toby Bowden as the victim in the 7 a.m. incident. According to investigators, Bowden was in a left travel lane that was blocked by fire trucks, working the scene of a crash. An approaching Honda Civic operated by 31-year-old Christopher Thornton was attempting to avoid colliding with a fire truck before losing control and striking Bowden. Bowden died at the scene while a sheriff's office deputy standing near Bowden had non-life-threatening injuries. Thornton was taken into custody on vehicular homicide, reckless driving, driving under the influence and failure to maintain lane charges.
